Choosing the Right Mouthguard for Your Sport

The level of protection you need depends on the "impact profile" of your activity.

  • High-Impact (Football, MMA, Hockey): Requires a heavy-duty gel-fit mouthguard. These use a dual-layer design with a hard outer shell and a soft inner liner to disperse shock away from the point of contact.

  • High-Oxygen (Basketball, Soccer): Look for slim-profile designs or "breathable" guards with integrated channels that allow you to speak and breathe easily during intense cardio.

  • Braces-Friendly: Unlike standard guards, orthodontic mouthguards are made of medical-grade silicone that fits over brackets without boiling. They prevent the lips from being lacerated against the braces during an impact.

How to Fit Your Boil-and-Bite Mouthguard

To get a "dentist-like" fit at home, follow these steps for any thermoplastic guard:

  1. Boil: Submerge the guard in boiling water for the time specified (usually 60–90 seconds).

  2. Cool: Quickly dip it in cold water for one second so you don't burn your mouth.

  3. Mold: Place it in your mouth, bite down firmly, and use your fingers to press the material against your teeth and gums.

  4. Set: Place the guard in cold water to "lock" the shape.
