A TENS unit primarily targets sensory nerves to block pain signals using low-frequency currents. An Interferential (IFC) unit uses a much higher frequency that "interferes" deep within the tissue, making it more effective for deep-seated chronic pain and reducing swelling in joints.

Most clinical protocols recommend a treatment time of 15 to 30 minutes. While TENS is safe for longer use, "accommodation" can occur, where the body gets used to the sensation. If this happens, slightly increase the intensity or change the pulse mode on your TENS machine unit.

Many portable TENS units are FDA-cleared for over-the-counter (OTC) use for general pain relief. However, high-intensity clinical models or those used for specific medical conditions may require a recommendation or prescription from a healthcare provider.

To maintain effective conductivity, TENS pads should be replaced when they lose their adhesion or the gel begins to dry. On average, a quality electrode will last for 15–20 applications if the skin is cleaned properly before use.
