How to Choose a Brace to Immobilize a Thumb

When dealing with a broken thumb or a grade 3 sprain, the goal is total immobilization. Not all braces provide the structural rigidity needed for bone healing:

  • For Basal & Mid-Shaft Fractures: A Thumb Spica is required. By incorporating a wrist stay, these braces prevent the tendons from pulling on the fracture site, ensuring the bone sets correctly.
  • For Distal (Tip) Fractures: A shorter thumb splint may be appropriate if the goal is to protect the tip while allowing wrist mobility.
  • Material Matters: For long-term recovery (4–6 weeks), choose breathable, foam-lined aluminum stays or BioSkin materials to prevent skin maceration and improve comfort during 24/7 wear.
