When is a Thumb Spica Splint Necessary?

A thumb spica is clinically indicated when total immobilization of the carpometacarpal (CMC) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints is required. This "enforced rest" is critical for:

  • De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: By neutralizing the wrist and thumb, the spica allows the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis tendons to glide without friction.

  • Scaphoid & First Metacarpal Fractures: For bone healing, a spica splint for fracture must be rigid. Our models feature moldable thermoplastic stays or aluminum supports that can be contoured for a precise, "cast-like" fit.

  • Ligament Injuries (UCL): For Skier's Thumb, a spica prevents the thumb from deviating outward, protecting the ulnar collateral ligament from further stress.
