Comprehensive Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Right Hip Support

Choosing the correct hip orthosis depends largely on whether you need functional support for activity or immobilization for healing. Using the wrong brace can lead to improper joint loading or skin irritation.

Clinical Indications for Hip Bracing

  1. Osteoarthritis (OA): Functional braces like the Unloader Hip are designed to shift pressure away from the damaged joint compartment, allowing for improved mobility and decreased reliance on anti-inflammatories.

  2. Labral Tears & FAI: Targeted compression wraps help stabilize the joint capsule and reduce "clicking" or "pinching" during athletic movement.

  3. Post-Surgical Recovery: Following a hip arthroscopy or replacement, a Breg T Scope or similar hinged brace is used to strictly limit the degree of abduction and rotation to protect the surgical site.

Measuring for a Precise Fit

For medical-grade equipment, standard clothing sizes are often insufficient. To ensure proper compression and prevent migration:

  • Waist Circumference: Measure at the level of the iliac crest (top of the hip bone).

  • Thigh Circumference: For wraps and abduction braces, measure the widest part of the mid-thigh.

  • Note on Skin Care: Rigid braces should be worn over a thin, moisture-wicking layer to prevent pressure sores and dermatitis.
