Choosing the Right Heat Wrap for Your Hand or Wrist Injury

Thermal therapy is most effective when the wrap is tailored to your specific symptoms. Use this guide to find the best fit for your needs:

Heat for Arthritis & Stiffness

For chronic stiffness in the finger joints or base of the thumb, moist heat is generally preferred. Moist heat wraps (like those from Chattanooga or Softouch) penetrate deeper into the small joints of the hand than dry electric pads, helping to increase range of motion and reduce morning stiffness.

Heat for Carpal Tunnel & Tendonitis

If you are treating Carpal Tunnel or wrist strains, a compression heat wrap is ideal. These wraps use an anatomical brace to hold a heat pack firmly against the volar (palm side) or dorsal (back side) of the wrist, providing support while the heat relaxes the surrounding tendons.

Safety & Application Tips

  • Duration: Apply heat for 15–20 minutes. Do not exceed 20 minutes to avoid skin irritation.

  • Skin Barrier: Always ensure the wrap has a cloth barrier or integrated cover to prevent thermal burns on the thin skin of the wrist.

  • Movement: For best results, perform gentle range-of-motion stretches immediately after removing the heat wrap while the tissues are still warm and pliable.
