Measuring and Using Your Cast Cover: A Buyer’s Guide

To achieve a guaranteed watertight seal, proper sizing is more important than the brand you choose. Follow these clinical guidelines to ensure your recovery stays on track.

How to Measure for the Correct Fit

A waterproof seal is created by the tension of the rubber against your skin, not the cast itself. To find your size:

  1. Measure the Circumference: Measure your limb 1-2 inches above the top of your cast. This is where the seal must sit against bare skin.
  2. Measure the Length: Measure from the tip of your fingers/heel to 2 inches above the cast.
  3. Account for Swelling: If your injury is recent, ensure the opening is snug enough to remain watertight as initial swelling goes down.

Can You Really Swim with a Cast Cover?

Yes, but you must choose a submersible model. While "showering" covers are great for splashing, they can leak if held underwater for long periods. For swimming, we recommend vacuum-sealed cast protectors. These models use a small pump to remove air from the sleeve, creating a pressurized seal that stays 100% dry even during active swimming in pools or the ocean.

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Protector

To get the most out of your $15–$30 investment, keep these maintenance tips in mind:

  • Smooth the Edges: If your fiberglass cast is particularly rough, wrap a small piece of athletic tape or a thin sock over the top edge before sliding the cover on.
  • Dry After Use: Always hang the cover to air dry away from direct sunlight, which can degrade the rubber over time.
  • Check the Seal: Always test the seal in a sink or shallow water before full submersion to ensure it hasn't been punctured.

Note: If you experience numbness or tingling while wearing a cover, it may be too tight. Remove it immediately and consult our sizing charts for a larger option.
