Short Description
- Optional insert for greater posterior support.
- Can be heated either wet or dry.
- Convenient universal size.
The MedSpec Thermoplastic Moldable Insert is an optional thermoplatic lumbo-sacral insert that can be added to the posterior pocket of the Med Spec Back-n-Black with Thermo Pocket orthosis or Back-n-Shape II back supports. It measures 7.5" x 13" and it can be heated wet or dry to mold to an individual patient for customized support. This is not returnable once it has been altered.
How to Mold the MedSpec Thermoplastic Insert (Item #163000)
The thermoplastic insert is designed to be heat-activated, allowing it to transition from a rigid state to a pliable one. Once softened, it can be contoured specifically to the patient's lumbar curve for a custom-fit medical orthosis.
Important: This procedure should ideally be performed by a medical professional (orthotist, physical therapist, or physician) to ensure proper spinal alignment during the molding process.
Preparation
-
Check Fit: Before heating, place the cold insert into the posterior pocket of the Back-n-Black with Thermo Pocket to ensure it is centered.
-
Safety First: Use protective gloves when handling the heated insert. Always apply the support over a layer of clothing (like a t-shirt) to protect the patient's skin from heat.
Heating Instructions
You can use a convection oven or a hydrocollator (water bath) to soften the material.
-
Oven Method (Recommended):
-
Preheat the oven to 160°F (71°C).
-
Place the insert on a non-stick baking sheet.
-
Heat for approximately 2–3 minutes. The insert is ready when it becomes translucent or soft enough to bend easily.
-
-
Water Bath Method:
-
Submerge the insert in a hydrocollator or hot water bath at 160°F for 3 minutes.
-
If submerging, keep the insert in its protective plastic bag to keep it dry, then remove it from the bag before fitting.
-
The Molding Process
-
Position the Patient: Have the patient stand in a neutral, upright position with feet shoulder-width apart.
-
Insert & Apply: Slide the warm, pliable insert into the brace's posterior pocket. Immediately wrap the Back-n-Black around the patient’s waist.
-
Cinch for Contact: Use the hand-assist strap and the D-ring closure to pull the brace tight. This force presses the warm plastic against the patient's lower back, forcing it to take the shape of their lumbar curve.
-
Set Time: Keep the patient in a still, upright position for 2–4 minutes. As the plastic cools, it will return to a rigid state, "locking in" the custom shape.
Care and Re-Molding
-
Adjustments: If the fit is uncomfortable, the insert can be re-heated and re-molded multiple times.
-
Cleaning: Always remove the insert before hand-washing the fabric brace. Wipe the plastic insert with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Use of the MedSpec Thermoplastic Moldable Insert can increase rigidity and the level of support for a MedSpec LSO.
