Much better for my neck
This is a much better sling alternative by having the shoulder carry the load rather than your neck. Very pleased.

Better than the UltraSling II
Much better than the UltraSling 2 that was provided to me at the hospital. Wish it was a bit easier to fit and adjust. Took a second for me to read the directions with my husband and fit it correctly.

Very ease for me to fit and use
Super easy to use and way more comfortable than other "doctor issued" slings. The arm harness is much more comfortable than the traditional over the shoulder sling. The only negative is that if you have a short torso, you may need to improvise a bit as the link of some of the straps is a bit too long. I called DME-Direct and they helped me shorten the strap length to get it to fit just right. Great customer support!

Donjoy UltraSling IV
The sling was much better than the one that was provided to me after the surgery. The addition of the belt under the armpit of the opposite arm is incredibly helpful. The buckle system is much easier to get on and off compared to the simple double velcro system that the provided sling has, which made a huge difference once the frequency of getting in and out of the sling increased. My only gripe with the design is that the forearm was ending up tilted more downward after a bit of wear, tilting the hand down, and making the shoulder feel a little less supported than desired. I played around with the belts to try to change the position of the forearm to be more horizontal, but all I got from doing that is more pressure from the belts all around. This created the need to continue pulling the front belt up to re-adjust the forearm position. Overall, I think it was a good purchase, definitely made a difference in comfort level, which is super important considering you're already experiencing discomfort from the surgery. The contoured foam pillow of this brace was so much better than the brick of a pillow that the supplied sling has. Sleeping with it on was also comfortable. I found it to be more cushioned in general (straps, cushion, etc.), and the distributed pressure of this design saved my neck I think. I would recommend it.

The one I got from AMazon was...
The one I got from Amazon was used and broken. I called DME-Direct and they assured me that their slings were pristine and unused. Mine arrived yesterday and it's - perfect! All is good.

Don't let hospital charge you...
If you're having surgery on your shoulder/arm/hand, this is what you need. Take it with you to the hospital. Don't let a hospital charge you a fortune for a woeful version that depends on your neck to hold up your arm. It also has generous adjustability and looks like a very large person could use it. This sling is the same brand as what the hospital provided, but 100% better.

Comfort is top notch
Although I measured correctly for my arm there are no measurements for your chest for the shoulder strap. The arm was between 11 and 12 inches so I ordered the medium but although I'm a woman 5'7" and weigh 207 lbs the weight is mostly below my shoulders. The mediumb strap was way too big. I tightened everything as tight as possible and it was still too big. I ordered the small and I'm wearing it but the front strap from the arm to the shoulder is as tight as it can go. The rings touch each other. Very comfortable compared to the neck strap on the donjoy 3. I gave it a 4 rating only because of the strap length. These are clearly designed to men's measurements.

Best sling I've used...
If you are looking at rotator cuff or shoulder surgery, this sling is indespensable! It made my life a lot better for the two months that I had to wear it after surgery. I can't speak to having tried or tested other slings of late, but I have used simple-type slings that wrap around your neck. The shoulder-armpit design of this sling's support strap was a true stroke of genius by the inventor. I never really noticed it being there. I did not use the forearm pad as my surgeon said that I did not need it because my bicep tendon was fine and did not require repair. I was a bit nervous about the sling securing my arm to my torso without this pad and wrap-around body strap. However the sling securely held my arm against my torso without the wrap-around strap.

It is a bit confusing the first time you put it on, and I admit to using profanity while trying to figure out what appeared to be a puzzle. However, the instructions and videos here helped to figure it out. After once or twice putting it on and taking it off, you get the hang of it quickly. Hooking and unhooking the two clips is easy and convenient.

I did find that the strap that runs from the shoulder harness to the double clip strap was too long, but this could have been due to me not using the hip pad. I am six feet tall and measured my arm length at about 13 inches, so I bought a large. The sling portion was perfect for my arm and hand, but this front strap was way too long. I couldn't tighten it enough. Interestingly, the nurse who adjusted and fitted the sling after my surgery removed the long front strap and attached the double clip strap with its plastic loop directly to the two straps in the shoulder harness. I would never have thought of this. While I can't guarantee that your nurse will know how best to rig this sling for you, I would recommend that you take the sling to your surgery and give it to your nurse. My guess is that they all know how to rig it depending on your needs and the recommendations of your surgeon.

I had to buy this myself. I don't think there's a health insurance that covers it based on what I was told. As far as I'm concerned, it was the best money I could have spent to assist with a comfortable and safe recovery after rotator cuff surgery. I've told everyone, including my surgeon, that this is a fantastic product! My recommendation to anyone facing rotator cuff or shoulder surgery is don't go into surgery without this Donjoy Ultrasling IV prodcut.

Neck happy, elbow just fine...
After rotator cuff surgery, my surgeon fitted me with the DonJoy UltraSling II/III, which was good. However, this sling cut into my neck and put my elbow to sleep. My surgeon said that as long as I used the abduction pillow (comes with both the II/III and the IV slings) I could get this sling and use it instead. The IV sling states that it reduces neck problems and ulnar nerve (elbow) compression. I found this to be true. My neck is happier, and my elbow isjust fine. The strap under the arm didn't bother me at al which I was initially worried about. I liked this sling and wore it all the time like my surgeon wanted.

Was new from Here - not through Amazon
I ordered the same Ultrasling Iv from Amazon and the brace arrived used, had dog hair on it, and it smelled like cigarette smoke. I returned it and rdered it from DME-Direct after my doctor said to get it from them as well. Thank you!

Not covered by my insurance so I...
This wasn't covered by my insurance and the doctor's office wanted 3x the amount for the same support sling so I bought it here. Online ordering was very easy.

Much better
I found this to be more comfortable than the DonJoy UltraSling III. The strap design removes more stress off of your neck. The abducting pillow is shaped a little bit differently as well which was more comfortable for my elbow.

  • From Brad Zendahas
    • Q: I had shoulder surgery for a shoulder fracture and I'm going to be needing a comfortable sling for the next 3-4 months. How do I decide between the II, II, and IV?
    • A: The material and the strapping is the only difference between these slings. The Ultrasling II has a cotton material in the sling. The Ultrasling III was designed with a mesh material in the sling so that it would be breath better for more comfort. Those two slings have the same strap design over the opposite shoulder and across the back to your waist. The Ultrasling IV has the same type of material as the III, but the strapping system features a loop around the opposite shoulder to take the pressure off the neck. All of the slings come with a 15 degree abduction pillow and will support your shoulder well.

    • Q: How is the IV different than the III?
    • A: The shoulder strap on the Ultrasling IV has the under-the-armpit portion, which helps offload stress on your neck while providing comfort and support for your shoulder. The shoulder strapping on the II goes right over the shoulder area like a normal sling.
