Collar
After a serious blow to the head/neck during a tackle, my son was put in an extrication collar and on a long board and rushed off the field. They were "playing it safe" as it turns out (because he didn't have spinal damage) so he was out of the collar pretty quickly but I was glad that they were prepared because it was a brutal slam and it really looked like his helmet might not have protected him enough.

Use these all the time
When responding to motor vehicle collisions, accident victims frequently complain of neck pain. We typically secure the patient to a backboard, and then apply a 911 First Response collar to restrict spinal motion. This is our standard protocol because without the collar, spinal injury can be much worse. We've found this to be a necessary and effective device.
