Short Description
The Step-Smart Brace is a low-profile AFO specifically engineered to treat foot drop and CMT. Featuring patented Jacob Joint technology, it provides dynamic shock absorption to prevent foot slap and restore a natural gait. Lightweight and under 11" high, it fits easily in standard US and EU shoe sizes without needing a larger size.
Step-Smart Drop Foot Brace (AFO) by Insightful Products
The Step-Smart Brace is a low-profile, lightweight Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) specifically engineered for patients dealing with Foot Drop. Unlike traditional rigid plastic braces that restrict all movement, the Step-Smart utilizes patented Jacob Joint® technology to provide a dynamic gait that feels natural and reduces walking fatigue.
Whether your foot drop is a result of a stroke, nerve injury, or a chronic condition like Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT), this brace offers a customizable level of support that fits seamlessly into your daily life.
Dynamic Support with Jacob Joint® Technology
The core of the Step-Smart design is its ability to handle "foot slap" through controlled shock absorption. The brace provides resistance the moment your heel hits the ground, gently lowering the foot. During the swing phase, the joint provides the necessary lift to ensure toe clearance, significantly reducing the risk of trips and falls.
The Patented Bumper System (Customized Resistance)
The Step-Smart is unique because it is adjustable. The "Jacob Joint" uses compression bumpers to control the speed of the foot's descent.
-
Green (Soft): Best for users under 140 lbs or those requiring minimal resistance.
-
Amber (Medium): The "standard" bumper, ideal for most adults (140–200 lbs).
-
Black (Stiff): Recommended for users over 200 lbs or very active walkers who need a stronger "spring" back to the neutral position.
Step Smart Brace Features & Benefits:
-
Low-Profile Design: At under 1 lb and only 11 inches high, it is one of the most discreet AFOs on the market. It fits easily into most standard lace-up shoes or sneakers without requiring you to "size up."
-
Natural Toe Flexion: The unique 3/4 foot plate design allows your toes to flex naturally. This is critical for activities like walking on inclines, climbing stairs, or transitioning from sitting to standing.
-
Customizable Resistance: Each brace comes with a "Starter Kit" of interchangeable compression bumpers (Green, Amber, and Black). This allows you to fine-tune the level of lift and shock absorption based on your body weight and activity level.
-
Clinically Proven for CMT: The Step-Smart is a leading choice for managing Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, as it provides the lateral stability needed to manage foot inversion without the bulk of a full-shell brace.
- Available in Two Sizes: See Size and Fot tab for sizing chart and measurement/fit help.
- Recommended Manufacturer HCPC: L1971, L2210
Model Options for Every Need
-
Standard Step-Smart: The ideal choice for everyday foot drop recovery.
-
Step-Smart Pro: Features a guided calf section for improved tracking and enhanced stability for users with more significant gait deviations.
-
Step-Smart CMT: Optimized with additional padding and specialized straps to address the specific alignment needs of the CMT foot.
Clinical Indications for the Step-Smart AFO
The Step-Smart is a therapeutic medical device specifically designed to manage the clinical challenges of Foot Drop (Drop Foot). This orthosis is indicated for patients who exhibit a lack of dorsiflexion (the ability to lift the foot) during the swing phase of walking.
Common conditions treated with the Step-Smart include:- Peroneal Nerve Injury: Often caused by trauma or compression, resulting in the inability to lift the foot at the ankle.
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT): The Step-Smart is a preferred choice for CMT patients because it provides the necessary lift while allowing the midfoot to flex naturally.
- Post-Stroke Recovery (CVA): Helps stabilize the gait and prevent "tripping" for patients regaining mobility after a stroke.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Provides assistance for "muscle fatigue" that often leads to dragging the toes during long walks.
- Spinal Cord Injuries (L4/L5): Targeted support for lumbar-related foot weakness.
- Herniated Disc/Sciatica: For temporary or permanent nerve impingement affecting the lower leg.
To ensure patient safety and proper outcomes, the Step-Smart is generally not recommended for:
- Severe Medial/Lateral Instability: If the ankle rolls severely to the side, a more rigid, full-shell AFO may be required.
- Severe Spasticity: Patients with high-tone "equinovarus" (the foot being pulled strongly down and in) may require a custom-molded orthosis.
- Open Sores: As with any brace, it should not be worn over broken skin or active pressure ulcers.
