Very Functional--It Works
After having been in a boot for over 8 weeks healing a stress fracture, having to now support my ankle and arch, I was hesitant about it being bulky and uncomfortable. But it is not bulky (you can wear regular tennis shoes with it and it doesn't spread out that much. And, it is comfortable to wear. I would recommend this product (oh and I love that it came in white as well as black--I still like to have a little bit of style!

Comfortable support in the best way
First of all, I received this in record time. Next day to Southern California.

I have played soccer for over 10+ years, rugby for 4+ years, basketball for 8+ years and ran track and field for 8+ years. For the first time ever, while playing basketball, I sprained my ankle. Grade 2. Partially torn ligaments. Its been two weeks and I still can't walk with a normal stride. I am ordering this so that I have support while I walk around during my daily activities.

This is the first brace I have ever tried or ever worn.

Size: I wear a size 9 shoe and 13-inch ankle measured around the heel. I fell within the small or medium size according to the sizing chart. I played it safe and went with a small. The small is a great fit. Its really snug and I'm sure if someone's foot was a little too big for the small, this brace could accommodate. Also, this fits into my shoe no problem.

Fit/Support: The first thing I noticed is that the middle of the laces are stitched onto the front part of the brace. This will help keep the laces even and help keep things lined up. I laced up the brace and this first layer of protection is pretty firm and comfortable. This lace-up part of the brace prevents over flexing your foot up towards the sky and down to the ground. I wanted to restrict the most movement as possible of my foot and laced them pretty tight. The figure 8 straps are where the real support comes in. The straps reinforce the up/down resistance that is originally provided for by the lace up part of the brace. The velcro on the side for the straps is on the brace in a way that helps you align the straps to the proper position and same way every time (just like what stitching the laces onto the brace will do). Not only do these straps greatly reinforce the up/down resistance, because of the way the straps wrap around your foot and back to the same side, these straps will work to resist the "rolling" or eversion/ inversion action that leads sprains. Then to top it off there is a final strap that wraps around the top of your ankle above the ankle bones... the "high" ankle area. This strap gives good compression as the other two parts of the brace does. It also secures the laces so nothing gets loose.

Range of motion: When sitting, with no shoes on, with my foot flat on the ground, with brace as tight as possible, while not cutting off circulation, the brace limits heel from rising to about 1/3 the distance off the ground compared to my other foot. Again, I am still recovering from the sprain so this low range of motion might be due to the sprain. If I loosen everything up the range of motion frees up. The straps still prevent rolling of the ankles however loose the lace up part of the brace is. I can move my foot left and right which is good and the brace does protect from moving the foot left and right too much. All ranges of motion are protected for. Compared to a professional athletic trainer's tape job, this gives less support but more range of motion.

Rating: The reason I gave this four stars instead of five is because as a life long athlete I have had to tape my ankles up before and this brace just doesn't give you that total all direction firm security. This brace mimics when athletic trainers tape the ankle in a lot of ways, the lace up part of the brace mimics the base layer of ankle taping and the figure 8 straps mimic the tape layer that goes around the heel from outside of your foot to the inside. In my humble opinion, the part of real athletic trainer style tape job that this brace is missing, is the the layer of tape that goes from the middle of your foot, past the heel, then ends at the achilles/ calf. This layer of tape keeps the foot bent at a desired angle. This layer helps keep the heel off the ground and adds resistance to accidentally flexing your foot too far up and jamming the front part of the ankle.

Comments: As an ankle brace It provides great support and keeps everything real tight and compressed. I couldn't say how well it compares to other braces. This brace does not fully mimic a real tape job which I suppose is one of its intended purposes. This brace will help to prevent respraining if you heal up to 100% because it adds resistance to the inversion, eversion motions and adds quick support in all the right ways. This brace is way faster than a tape job and for my purpose, the need for extra support while walking around, its awesome. Because it can't fully mimic a tape job (and I don't suppose any brace could), I wouldn't have 100% confidence in this brace to replace a tape job and confidence is everything in sports.

TL;DR: Lots of support in a way that will resist ankle sprains. Way faster than taping your ankles up, but not as good. Really comfortable and shipped super fast.

Get the size right
I'm transitioning from a boot to an ankle brace due to a broken bone in my foot with torn tendons going up behind my ankle bone. My ortho doc wanted me to wear a lace up ankle brace for the final two weeks of my recovery. I noticed conflicting reviews about sizing. My size measurements put me exactly on the line between a large and an extra large. I decided to call DME-Direct to get their recommendations. They said that if you are on the margin go with the smaller size. They were exactly right. I wanted to wear the brace fairly snug to give me adequate support and the large size is just right. As I have slim ankles, I can tell if I had the extra large it would have been too large and the lacing wouldn't have been able to lace up tight enough. So, if in doubt go with the smaller size. I've never worn one of these before so I'm not sure how they should feel but it does seem to provide good ankle support. It doesn't provide much support in the foot but I guess they're not designed for that purpose. I am able to wear them in most of my shoes but if your shoes are snug in the heel area it could be tight.

Amazing ankle stabilizer
I love to hike but my left ankle is pretty messed up. My outer ankle rolls frequently without warning, even when walking on flat surfaces. My inner ankle has tendonitis and after many miles it can become painful. I have always used Ace bandages and ankle sleeves but they never seemed to offer enough support. Last summer, I was hiking a rocky downhill trail when my ankle rolled. I ended up with a bad sprain. I took a lot of time off to heal before I started hiking again. After a few hikes my ankle rolled again and I ended up with another sprain.

I realized then that I needed something much more supportive to stabilize my ankle so I ordered this product.
It has changed everything!! I haven't had a single ankle roll in the time since I've been wearing it. My ankle feels strong and stable when I hike. My sprain is now fully healed because of the stability. I've found that my tendonitis is much more mild. I also like that it is very comfortable. It fits perfectly around the bottom of my foot and doesn't cause any swelling in my trail running shoes like some ankle sleeves can. I forget that i'm wearing it after a few minutes. Also, it washes very easily. Great product at a great price!!!! I will never hike without my ankle stabilizer again!

Best
Best ankle braces money can buy. I have terrible ankles from basketball and other sports so I used these to stabilize my ankles during a backpacking trip instead of using hiking boots. Not a single ankle issue despite many opportunities with a 45 pound pack.

ASO is helping my daughter
So far, so good! My daughter is a freshman in high school, wearing a 9.5 in women’s shoes. We bought size Medium. Her volleyball coach requires the front row players to wear double ankle braces, so we bought two of these. They are reinforced with straps that wrap around the bottom of the foot and Velcro up the side, then have a wrap around the top...securing the laced part, as well as the bottom straps. She’s worn them everyday for almost 2 months. No issues! Of course she says that they make her “ankles look fat”..(teenage girls) lucky for her, the whole team is having to wear them, so everyone has “fat ankles”!! They get the job done....with all the training and jumping and things she does, they definitely support her ankles and we’ve had plenty of time and opportunities for them to give way and twist her ankles...but NOPE!! Solid reinforcement!! We will buy them for our next athlete!!

Love the product
cannot compare this to other ankle supports, but it has done wonders for a flare up of traumatic arthritis in my ankle. Somewhat uncomfortable over bare skin, I have been wearing it over a sock or elastic sleeve ankle support. It is comfortable with shoes, but a little hard to get over slip on type shoes. I wore it daily for two weeks and the pain and swelling is almost gone. I also had a cortisone injection which helped as well. It significantly reduced the pain and limping when I put it on the very first day. I swam with it and it dried quickly. Easy to clean. Easy to put on.

Solid ankle brace
I bought the ASO ankle brace after much research on the internet, while laid up with a really bad (grade 2) ankle sprain. It seemed to be highly regarded and recommended on many blogs, web sites, web reviews, and was much much better than a one truly uncomfortable my orthopedic specialist issued me (which I returned to the doc's office). I was able to wear the ASO immediately without discomfort.

- The only negative --- The ankle "cuff" does not go around my leg unless I pull it so tight that it almost cuts off circulation. I had a lot of swelling above the ankle, so this was not going to work. YMMV. Fortunately, I sew and on my sewing machine, I bought some wide velcro at a fabric store and created a velcro "extender" that works great. I had to make a similar "extender" for one pair of sandals that has velcro closure over the foot arch area. Again, that solution worked perfectly. The ASO logo/badge still does not sit at the front center of my leg, but that doesn't matter.

- I also bought this same brace in white, to wear on the golf course. DME-Direct had the best price and I got the brace in two days.

Best brace I have used
This is my personal opinion, but it comes from someone with years of ankle challenges from playing sports, improper footwear, and working on my feet. After many different types of ankle braces + reading SO MUCH INFORMATION about this product lol --- I have finally found my prince!!! This ankle brace is -------PHENOMENAL!!! I wear a size 9 - 9.5 shoe, and I need to wear wide shoes at times -- so I ordered the X large --- NOPE too big. The MEDIUM FIT PERFECTLY... measure your foot correctly. This ankle brace is AMAZING. It has really helped me. I would RECOMMEND THIS 100%. Like I said the MEDIUM fit my foot -- I have wide-ish feet and wear size 9-9.5 women's shoe. It fits like a dream, supports my ankle, and is so great to have around if I roll my ankle again. I am working hard to strengthen my ankle through a variety of exercises, but having my ASO Ankle Stabilizer gives me piece of mind!

Broken Ankle Well Worth The Money
So, originally I thought I had just sprained my ankle really badly and I purchased this brace. I am a size 6 normally, so I ordered the XS size. I thought it might be too small since it was very tight, but I was trying to wear it with just a compression sock and it was causing swelling at the front part of my foot and toes. I noticed that I didn't really seem to have an issue when I wore a thicker sock over it, so that solved the problem. After 4 weeks and not feeling a significant enough improvement, I got some xrays done and found out that I had a fractured fibula as well. Fortunately, it turned out that I already had good placement of the bone and the doctor said I could get an air boot, but would probably only need it for a couple of weeks or he recommended a lave up ankle brace (I them mentioned that I already had been wearing this one). I got the boot, but I found it to be too bulky and not realistic when I tried to walk in it, so I have gone back to just wearing this and it is much better and even allows me to wear an old pair of boots that I already owned. I will probably be wearing this for a while until I recover fully, but I have used it frequently and have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it. In fact, I am tempted to order another for my non-injured ankle.

Recommended for recovery from ankle fracture
After my cast was removed, from a surgical repair for a triple ankle fracture, with dislocation, I used the ASO ankle stabilizer instead of the walking boot. This stabilizer is the same one offered at my Orthopedic surgeon's offer, at a fraction of their price.
This brace is comfortable, easy to adjust and it washes well, I would recommend the ASO stabilizer for ankle injury recovery.

Great product
After spraining my ankle and going through months of physical therapy (seriously!), my physical therapist recommended I get a lace-up brace to help stabilize my ankle when I exercise. I've been using this on the elliptical and it works great - keeps my ankle stable and helps prevent swelling and soreness after exercising. Highly recommended.

Best for protecting your ankles
Bought the ASO for my daughter, who has rolled her ankle in the past, as a preventative measure for volleyball and basketball. She has not rolled her ankle since and she has found them easy to get used to as she is is 12 years old and hasn't used ankle braces before. Very comfortable.

Fantastic
I have sprained my ankle many times and I couldn't find a brace that would support my ankle and let me be mobile. Then my athletic trainer suggested this ankle brace and it provides support all the way around your ankle. It also allows you to be mobile which is hard to find in an ankle brace. I would suggest this brace to anyone with ankle problems.

Great support
Got this brace for my daughter who injured her ankle sliding into an anchored base. She borrowed a teammates brace the day it happened but she says this one gives better support. She will be wearing for the remainder of the season. It doesn't restrict movement and gives good support. Used the plastic stays first week then took them out. Will use them again if she reinjures the ankle. Great brace. Fast shipping too.

Good brace
I've now worn this brace 3 times and I'm very happy with it. I was a bit worried about braces in general and how well they fit within shoes. This brace has thin straps under the heel and fits very well within my hi-top basketball shoes. It isn't the fastest brace to get on even if you leave it laced up, but I don't mind because my ankle feels well secured, but yet I'm still able to jump. I also play volleyball and it hasn't been an issue either.

Went to buy the ASO ankle brace at Amazon because I thought I was getting a better price. Using it since the 90's!
I'm well over 50, but still get out there with my grandkids and play basketball. I'm a firm believer in not tempting fate, so I use the ASO's for added security and support when I'm playing. I can proudly say that the few minutes that it takes to put these on have saved my ankles from the agony of a sprain.
