More Ankle Braces for Support After Ankle Injuries..
Lets face it. Every ankle brace out there is different and they all claim to offer support and protection after an ankle injury. But what makes them different and how can you tell one apart from another? This selection guide is designed to help you sort through our different braces so you can find the best model for recovery after an ankle injury, or for a particular sport.
Years ago, ankle braces used to be made out of canvas material. They were big and bulky and often felt supportive yet uncomfortable. Today's models are made out alternative materials that offer enhanced breathability, and/or feature ballistic nylon construction for excellent strength and durability. Some feature wrap around designs while others have a traditional lace-up style. Whatever design is employed, the ankle brace has to provide sufficient protection to be affective and below are some basic attributes to look for in ankle supports to make sure you're getting the right one for your needs.
Ankle Brace Selection Criteria:
1The "boot" itself provides support and coverage from the forefoot all the way up above the malleolus (ankle bones). Removal of material to a make a more low profile brace often results in greater allowance for twisting motions to occur at the ankle - the very reason why you're getting a brace in the first place!
2The ankle brace should have vertical protection on the sides to provide support and protection against a rollover maneuver at the ankle joint. This is often seen in the form of vertical plastic struts, shells, or nylon straps that are pulled upward and are attached to the sides of the brace.
3 An ankle lock of nylon straps is applied in a figure eight fashion around the ankle to close of the joint and stabilize the ankle the split second a sprain is about to occur out on the athletic field.
4 Does the product close up the front with hook and loop fasteners, laces, or is it a pull-on design all together? Generally speaking, a lace-up design often provides a more exact fit while pull-up designs and velcro-fastening models offer quicker fitting but can offer less of an exact fit.
