Aircast
Recreational skier Glenn Johnson suffered from a segmental tibial fracture in the 1970's, and wore a cast for months. His leg was still on the verge of a nonunion. While doctors contemplated a bone graft, Johnson jeri-rigged a hard plastic piece that he lined with aircells and strapped on his leg. As he walked around wearing it, the aircells pulsated against the swelling and the pressure of the "air cast" helped heal his leg.
Johnson lacked a medical background, but he impressed enough experts. Years later, a landmark study confirmed the effectiveness of a pressurized splint based on his design. Thus "Aircast" was born. The use of aircells in orthopedic braces became the signature of this unique product line. Three decades and dozens of aircast inventions later, Aircast was bought by global giant Donjoy (in 2006).
